More than 300 million people are suffering from asthma, with around 461,000 expected deaths each year. Whilst asthma is a lifelong condition, most patients can be symptom-free with treatment and a self-management plan. A large proportion of patients slowly deteriorate across a number of days or even weeks, indicating that if periods of decline are accurately identified early on in the development of symptoms, it allows ample time for intervention and reduces the chance of further deterioration, which can lead to death.
